August 2007

So, I know the fat day of the week is usually Tuesday, but it my life it’s going to Mondays!

I need to lose 26 pounds by my birthday. (For cholesterol and life expectancy!) So, I created a simple system (I need simple!) where I have a goal weight for the week. My new goal weight starts on Monday. (Hence… Fat Monday!) If I am under my goal, then I can relax and have a burger, if I am over it’s grilled chicken and broccoli!

I also know how much I like food and didn’t want to create some system I wouldn’t stick with after 2 weeks…

I’m starting out with a goal of losing 1 pound a week for 6 weeks, then half a pound a week. I’m limiting my calories to about 2000 a day and started working out at a sweet new place near my house. I think I’ll get ahead pretty easy, which will be good as I imagine it’ll only get harder as I get closer to July.

Did you know that 1 pound of fat is about 3500 calories? So, If you eat 500 less calories each day, you’ll lose a pound a week… In the end (I read a lot last night on it!) weight loss or gain usually boils down to calories in and calories burned!

wish me luck.

So last week, vinnie had his skin tags in front of his left ear removed. It all went really well and the biggest struggle he had was not eating for 8 hours before surgery. If you’ve seen my son, it’s clear the boy likes his food. Anyway, he was pretty annoyed and upset after waking up from surgery, but we took him right home, got some food in him and he took a nap. Then he woke up, ate a full dinner, took a 30 minute break and then ate another full dunner while we ate. He’s a Mauriello!

As I reflect on that day, it’s been a powerful thing to think about handing you son over to some people and trusting that they are going to take good care of him. I guess we do that every time we get a babysitter or drop him off in the nursery, but it’s a whol other level when it is surgery. Heather and I had a peace about it all, as it was a simple procedure, but trusting the one you love into someone elses hands is always a spiritual moment for me…

OK, so I get home late last night after an awesome student ministries service… (more on that in a later post) and my computer isn’t working again! I spent hours the night before reformatting and installing Vista!!! So, I’ve narrowed the problem down to…

  • Motherboard – (I’ve always had some USB issues, not registering at 2.0…)
  • Power supply – (I have a hefty video card and I added to more hard drives when I installed Vista, maybe I pushed it over the edge)
  • Video Card – (Some of my errors were video related, but that could also come from the motherboard or powersupply…)
  • Vista – (grrrrr…)

It may be time for this old computer geek to go Mac…

YS had a link to this website in their newsletter. Pretty cool and very humbling. You just enter how much you make and then see where that places you on the global list.

Here’s a hint, odds are if you are reading this you are at least in the top 10% of the world and if you make $50,000 a year in the top 1%!

It’s just past midnight and I have been trying to get my Vista system at home working again. Now, keep in mind I was a computer geek for plenty of years and I tend to be the guy my friends call when they have computer problems.

So, this is both humbling and a pain in the rear that my computer was broke and that I’m having trouble getting it working again!
